The Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Blackwell Scholarship Program (DLB) offers awards to minority students who are high school graduates, undergraduate students, and adult learners, based on academic merit or financial need to pursue their education. Applicants must reside in Camden, Burlington, or Atlantic Counties and will be attending an accredited college, university, vocational or trade school in the Fall of 2024. The Mission

Inspired by our namesake, our mission is to inspire a better world by empowering future leaders through education. The DLB Scholarship Program accomplishes its mission by providing academic scholarships and mentoring support to individuals engaged in higher education. By supporting learning pursuits, we enable people to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Who is Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Blackwell?

Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Blackwell is the Lead Pastor of Asbury Community Church located in Woodlynne, New Jersey. He is not just a spiritual leader, but also an advocate, mentor, community leader, supporter, and a champion of education. His commitment to higher learning has inspired many and as a result, the Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Blackwell Scholarship Program was established.For the past 35 years Rev. Blackwell has been the Lead Pastor at Asbury United Methodist
Church. Under his forward-thinking direction, he has implemented innovative paradigms and strategic plans that resulted in an evangelistic intensive, prayer driven, and stewardship focused culture.
The Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Blackwell is a renaissance leader whose passion and love for God is
evident in his witness as pastor, devoted husband to Ann, father to Myika, and proud grandfather of Ava and Zoe Ramirez. He obtained a BA in Psychology from Clark College in Atlanta, GA, a M. Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY, and a Ph.D. from Alvernia University in Reading, PA.

Child of Destiny

The Child of Destiny Scholarship is open to minority high school seniors and undergraduate students based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and community service. The scholarship is intended for students pursuing educational opportunities at a vocational school, technical school, college, or university. Applicants must be able to
demonstrate financial need and have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0. The selected
candidate will receive a $1,000 scholarship to assist them in attaining their educational goals.
The applicant must be accepted to or enrolled in an accredited educational program.

Empowerment

The Empowerment Scholarship was established to aid a “non-traditional” minority student. This
scholarship is intended for persons aged 30 years and older, who are attending a college, university, or a trade school for the first time or returning to school after an absence to complete their technical/vocational, associate’s, or bachelor’s degree. The selected candidate will receive a $1,000 scholarship to assist them in attaining their educational goals. The applicant must be accepted to or enrolled in an accredited educational program. This scholarship is designed to help the student gain equal footing with their peers and further develop their career.

Legacy

This scholarship was established to provide assistance to active members of the Asbury
Community Church, Woodlynne, NJ who would like to pursue educational opportunities at a
vocational school, technical school, college, or university. The selected recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited program and plan to attend their program in the same academic year that the scholarship is awarded.

Leadership

The purpose of the Leadership Scholarship is to recognize an outstanding student who is
achieving excellence in their academic programs and have significant potential to assume
future leadership roles and would like to attain their degree in a Historically Black College/ University. The selected student will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and must be accepted and entering their freshman year of college in the fall or enrolled in a HBCU at the time of application. Applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0.

Foundation which provides educational scholarships to eligible high school graduating seniors,
enrolled college students, and adults returning to school. The Dubois Garvey Foundation is
organized as a New Jersey nonprofit corporation and has been granted an exemption from

Our Selection Committee is responsible for selecting scholarship recipients from all
eligible applicants. All applicants will be evaluated fairly and without bias based on the
scholarship criteria.
- The Selection Committee will use a blind rubric to score applications based on personal,
academic, extracurricular actives, other relevant accomplishments, goals, community
impact, and work history.
- Scholarship awards are distributed after recipients demonstrate enrollment as a full-
time student to an accredited program.
- All applicants must be undergraduate students.
- Applicants must be a minority and a U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United
States
- Applicants must have verifiable volunteer or work experience within the past two years.
- Award winners will be notified by email and/or by US postal mail.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
